Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates may only be obtained by the following who must be over 18 years of age and have a form of ID:

**Note: IF FATHER'S NAME IS NOT SHOWN ON BIRTH CERTIFICATE, HE OR HIS FAMILY CANNOT OBTAIN A COPY WITHOUT A COURT ORDER OR COURT ORDERED PATERNITY DETERMINATION.
BIRTH RECORDS:

Birth Records Start at 1853, however due to a flood these records starting from 1855 through 1864 are missing.
Actual birth certificates on file start from 1927.

MARRIAGE RECORDS:

Marriage Records start from 1809.
Actual marriage license are not public record.

 

DEATH RECORDS:

Death records start from 1853.
Actual death records start from 1927.

 

MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: 

Two forms of I.D. must be presented. Your I.D. must reflect your date of birth as well as your social security number.

If you reside in West Virginia you must apply in the county where you live, then you may get married in any county within the state.

If both parties reside outside of the state of West Virginia you may apply in any county in West Virginia and be married in any county within the state.

The fee for obtaining a marriage license is $36.00, cash or check with proper ID.

Age of Consent to Marry:

Age of consent to marry in WV  is 18 years old.
Any person under the age of 18 years old must obtain consent of a parent or legal guardian in whose custody they may be in at the time of application for marriage license.
No person under the age of 16 years old may be issued a  license except upon order of the circuit court and with the consent of the parent or legal guardian.


INFORMATION BRIDE AND GROOM NEED TO KNOW:
  • County and state where born
    Father and Mother's Name (Maiden)
    State where parents were born
    If divorced, Date finalized
    If spouse deceased,  Date of Death

ISSUANCE OF MARRIAGE LICENSE:

No blood test is required.
License is issued the same day you apply with the exception of under age, there is a 3 day waiting period.
License is good for 60 days from date of issuance.


ID REQUIRED FOR FOREIGN RESIDENTS:

If a foreign resident has a SSN ( As evidenced by a SS card, a green card or work visa, ETC.) That number will be placed on the marriage application. But if they do not, their tourist or visitor visa number or a number that would be equivalent to a United States SSN.
